Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) is one of India’s leading shipyards, founded in 1972 and owned by the Government of India. It is a “Miniratna”, Schedule-“A”, Category-I CPSE, listed on NSE and BSE, with the Government of India holding 67.91% as on March 31, 2025. The company is primarily engaged in shipbuilding and ship repair for both domestic and international markets, with its registered office at Perumanoor, Kochi, Kerala . CSL built the country’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier and has consistently expanded capabilities in hybrid and electric-powered vessels as well as complex defence platforms.
Its footprint includes: the main Kochi shipyard with three dry docks and the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF), both of which commenced operations after inauguration in January 2024; ship repair units at Mumbai Port, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (Kolkata) and at Marine Dockyard, Port Blair; and two wholly owned subsidiaries in Howrah and Udupi. CSL has exported vessels to ten countries, including Norway, Netherlands, Cyprus, USA, Germany, Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Liberia . The company also runs the Marine Engineering Training Institute and a Strategic & Advanced Solutions vertical (C‑SAS) focusing on knowledge-led maritime opportunities.
CSL’s portfolio covers defence and commercial ships such as Aircraft Carriers, Next Generation Missile Vessels, Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts, Offshore Patrol Vessels, dredgers, Ro-Pax vessels, electric passenger ferries, tugs and specialised offshore assets . As of the latest year, the company highlighted record performance metrics and strengthened capacity through the New Dry Dock and ISRF, reinforcing its ability to execute complex, high-value assignments. Hybrid: CSL secured an order from a European client to design and build a Hybrid Service Operation Vessel; subsequent steel cutting and keel laying milestones were completed for Hybrid SOV/CSOV projects during the year.
Hydrogen: India’s first indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Catamaran Vessel designed and developed by CSL sailed off to Varanasi on January 29, 2025.
Kochi: Deliveries continued for the Kochi Water Metro project; CSL also signed an agreement with Kochi Municipal Corporation for a Ro‑Ro vessel.
Udupi: Udupi‑CSL delivered a 70T Bollard Pull Tug to Polestar Maritime and won additional tug orders from Ocean Sparkle Limited; Hooghly‑CSL advanced multiple inland/coastal vessel projects.
Certification: CSL obtained ISO 27001:2022 certification for its Information Security Management System and won an industrial safety award from the State Government (Department of Factories and Boilers) in 2024.
Stake: The Government of India conducted an Offer for Sale in October 2024, reducing its stake in CSL to 67.91%.
Infrastructure: The New Dry Dock and ISRF at Kochi became operational, enhancing capacity to undertake complex projects and large-volume ship repairs.
CSL builds and repairs ships for defence and commercial customers in India and abroad. It also runs a Marine Engineering Training Institute and Strategic & Advanced Solutions vertical (C‑SAS).
The main shipyard and ISRF are in Kochi, with ship repair units in Mumbai, Kolkata and Port Blair; subsidiaries operate in Howrah and Udupi.
In FY 2024-25, Ship Building contributed 58.82% of turnover and Ship Repair 41.18%. Exports contributed 11.80% of turnover.
