About CESC Limited

 

CESC Limited is India’s first fully integrated electrical utility company, engaged in electricity generation and distribution under a licensed area model in and around Kolkata, West Bengal. It serves 3.7 million customers across Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and North and South 24 Parganas, with a consolidated customer base of over 4.7 million across its ventures. The Company operates a 750 MW generating station at Budge Budge and a 135 MW station at Garden Reach (Southern); Haldia Energy Limited, a 100% subsidiary, runs a 600 MW station at Haldia under a long-term PPA with CESC. Beyond Kolkata, CESC distributes power through Noida Power Company Limited (Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh), three Distribution Franchisees (Kota, Bharatpur, Bikaner in Rajasthan) and Malegaon (Maharashtra), and became the distribution licensee for Chandigarh effective February 1, 2025.

 

The Company is expanding into renewables with a planned 3.2 GW hybrid portfolio by FY 2028-29. Its subsidiary, Purvah Green Power Private Limited, is implementing three renewable projects totalling 1,200 MW through step-down subsidiaries. As on March 31, 2025, CESC had 42 subsidiaries (including 23 added during the year), with three material subsidiaries: Noida Power Company Limited, Haldia Energy Limited and Dhariwal Infrastructure Limited  . Core activities account for 100% of turnover: generation and distribution of electricity to domestic, industrial, commercial and other users in India.

 

Key milestones include the commissioning of Chandigarh’s distribution licence in 2025, signing of green power PPAs, and a growing pipeline of renewable projects under implementation in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

  • Chandigarh acquisition: Through its wholly owned subsidiary, CESC completed the acquisition of 100% of Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited; as the sole distribution licensee, it serves ~2.4 lakh customers with annual sales of ~1,700 MU. Within 45 days of takeover (effective February 1, 2025), it introduced a central call centre, WhatsApp services and a website to improve customer experience.
