Mutual funds have demonstrated a strong presence in the IPO market, investing over ₹6,900 crore in eight IPOs in August 2024. Record inflows have driven this substantial investment through SIPs and a favourable IPO market.
Why are mutual funds investing in IPOs?
Mutual funds often seek opportunities to maximise investors' returns. One recent trend in online mutual fund investment is the focus on IPOs. August saw the largest primary market fundraising since May 2022, with ten companies raising ₹17,000 crore.
Notably, the majority of mutual fund investments in these IPOs occurred via anchor investments, where funds are allocated in advance to ensure allotments. Mutual funds prefer this route for IPO investments to benefit from both short-term listing gains and the potential long-term growth of emerging companies.
Key investments in August IPOs
The largest mutual fund investment was in Brainbees Solutions, with a commitment of ₹2,810 crore for 4.21 crore shares. Ola Electric Mobility followed with 23.32 crore shares worth ₹2,703 crore. Premier Energies received investments of ₹622 crore.
Other notable investments included Premier Energies Ltd., which received ₹623 crore. Unicommerce eSolutions, which received ₹196 crore, and Interarch Building Products, which received ₹116 crore. These investments underscore how online mutual fund investment in IPOs is a significant strategy for generating alpha for investors.
Record listing gains
August's IPOs have yielded impressive listing gains for mutual funds. For example, Ola Electric surged 20% on its listing day and is currently trading 45% above its issue price. Brainbees Solutions recorded a 46% jump on debut, and Premier Energies skyrocketed by 98%. These gains reinforce why online mutual fund investment in IPOs is becoming increasingly popular among fund managers.
Looking ahead
According to analysts, mutual funds are likely to continue investing heavily in IPOs as long as the primary markets remain attractive. The growing trend of online mutual fund investment highlights how mutual funds are using IPOs to diversify portfolios and generate value for investors. As the primary market continues to evolve, mutual funds are expected to play a significant role in driving investment in new, high-growth companies.
